AEF is a not-for-profit corporation established by the Asian Pacific American Bar Association of the Greater Washington, D.C. area to grant fellowships to law students and engage in other educational activities related to the legal profession and the Asian Pacific American community. In its history, AEF has granted over $120,000 in fellowships to law students. AEF raises these funds in large part through its Annual Benefit Dinner, which Gray Plant Mooty has sponsored at the benefactor level, and through various donations to the silent auction.

Among its other annual activities, AEF oversees the Robert T. Matsui Annual Writing Competition for law students nationwide. Established in 2005 to honor the late U.S. Congressman Robert T. Matsui of California, this writing competition fosters legal scholarship on topics relevant to racial and ethnic minorities and the law. Each of the winning entries over the last three years has received a significant monetary prize and publication in UCLA’s Asian Pacific American Law Journal. Jimmy Chatsuthiphan, an associate in GPM’s D.C. office, served as a judge of the 2008 Writing Competition and is administering the Competition in 2009. Jimmy is also currently serving a two-year term on the AEF’s board of directors.
