Steve is a past chair of the Health Law & Nonprofit Organizations practice group and the Business Law department. He served as long-time counsel to Minneapolis Children’s Medical Center, and (following its merger with The Children’s Hospital, Inc. of Saint Paul) Children’s Hospitals and Clinics. He has dealt with numerous hospital-related matters, including mergers of health care systems, governance issues, credentialing and medical staff issues, ethical issues, and physician contracting.
Experience
- Handles mergers, acquisitions, and affiliations for nonprofits and health care providers; past transactions include sale of University of Minnesota Hospital; merger of Minneapolis Children’s Medical Center with the Children’s Hospital, Inc. of Saint Paul, and various affiliation agreements involving Minneapolis Children’s Medical Center and Ebenezer Society
- Organizes and restructures nonprofits and health care providers to best achieve charitable and business objectives
- Handles real estate matters for nonprofits and health care providers including purchases and sales, site development and construction, and real estate tax exempt status
- Serves as corporate counsel to nonprofits and health care providers in connection with the issuance of tax-exempt bonds and other financing arrangements
- Provides ongoing counseling and advice to nonprofit and health care boards of directors and management
