Tom Johnson Resumes Practice at Gray Plant Mooty
The law firm of Gray Plant Mooty is pleased to announce that Thomas L. Johnson has resumed his full-time law practice at the firm after serving nine years as President of Council on Crime and Justice. He will focus his practice on government relations, environmental matters, and complex investigations involving alleged wrongdoing or governance issues.
Johnson often represents clients involved with complex matters at the intersection of law and public policy. He was one of the lead attorneys on the Gray Plant Mooty team that, on behalf of the Minnesota Legislature, undertook an independent investigation into the collapse of the I-35W bridge. Tom also provided legal counsel to the University of Minnesota in conjunction with the environmental review of the new Gopher football stadium, and provided similar counsel to Hennepin County in conjunction with the new Twins baseball stadium.
Tom’s advice is frequently sought by public and private organizations relative to alleged wrongdoing or corporate governance issues where a credible, independent investigation would be beneficial. Additionally, he regularly assists private clients in their dealings with government, particularly relating to environmental matters, project funding, and land use issues.
Johnson served two terms on the Minneapolis City Council and, for 12 years, was the elected Hennepin County Attorney. He has been recognized by many local and national organizations including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (Environmental Quality Award), the National District Attorney’s Association (President’s Award), and the Minnesota State Bar Association (Professional Excellence Award).
Beyond his public service as an elected official and in the nonprofit sector, Tom has served on many boards of directors over the years. Until recently, he served as an adjunct professor at the University of St. Thomas Law School and currently is the independent member on the Institutional Conflict Review Committee at the University of Minnesota.
Johnson earned a Bachelor of Physics with honors at the University of Minnesota, his law degree from the University of Minnesota Law School, and his LL.M., with distinction, from the London School of Economics, University of London.
