Connection and Caring…

Gray Plant Mooty's Hats for Hope Project

When someone you know and love is diagnosed with cancer, life changes. It can bring heartache and sorrow. But it can also be a place of courage, hope and connection. Many of the people who work at Gray Plant Mooty have been in those places - more than a few of our colleagues have personally faced that diagnosis.

To connect with others dealing with this disease, Gray Plant Mooty employees began the Hats for Hope program in 2002. Staff members joined together to sew, knit and crochet hats and head coverings which are donated to patients undergoing chemotherapy. The Hats for Hope team has received numerous heart-warming letters and photographs from patients and oncology staff expressing their appreciation.

In the past six years, Hats For Hope has donated 14,000 hats to more than 42 cancer treatment facilities in Minnesota, North Dakota, and Iowa.

This program has received numerous awards, including the:

  • “Star Award” from the Minnesota Hematology and Oncology Foundation in February 2005, honoring volunteerism and the Hats for Hope program.
  • "Quality of Life Award” from the Minneapolis Chamber of Commerce in May 2004, recognizing the innovative Hats for Hope program and honoring GPM’s century-plus tradition of community involvement.
  • “Employer of the Year” award from the American Cancer Society in 2002, recognizing employers throughout the Twin Cities who have given outstanding assistance to their employees dealing with cancer.
