Preparing Your Workplace for a Possible Flu Pandemic

After years of worry about a possible avian flu pandemic, the world is experiencing an H1N1 (swine) virus outbreak that has spread from Mexico to the United States and numerous other countries. While cautioning U.S. residents not to panic, the U.S. has declared a public health emergency and pandemic preparation is underway and ramping up at all levels. While it is not time to panic, it appears that it is time to be prepared. Given the growing number of countries with confirmed H1N1 virus cases, employers should give serious consideration to embarking on or updating their pandemic planning efforts. Employers are legally obligated to provide a safe workplace, and it is usually difficult to plan for and respond thoughtfully to a crisis in its midst. Our goal in this seminar will be to update you on developments related to the H1N1 virus outbreak, discuss HR and employment law aspects of pandemic planning, and have a dialogue that we hope will be helpful to your workplaces in your pandemic planning efforts.
