In 2011, Gray Plant Mooty was recognized, for the third consecutive time, by the National Association for Female Executives and Flex-time Lawyers as one of the nation’s 50 best law firms for women. In its profile of the firm, WorkingMother.com said, "Gray Plant Mooty has created a firm-wide culture of trust, respect, and support for its women attorneys, including its working moms."
Gray Plant Mooty was selected as one of the top 100 workplaces in the Twin Cities metropolitan area, according to an employee-based survey project conducted for the Star Tribune.
To identify the Twin Cities’ top 100 workplaces, the Star Tribune and WorkplaceDynamics, an independent employment research company, contacted over 1,000 local employers. To qualify, companies had to have at least 50 employees in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area and agree to allow employees to take a confidential survey—which measured employee opinions on company leadership, career opportunities, workplace flexibility, compensation, and benefits.
Gray Plant Mooty was one of just 55 companies in Minnesota to be named to the annual “Best Places to Work” list compiled by The Business Journal. To be considered, a company needed to have at least 10 employees in the Twin Cities metro area, or be a Minnesota-based company with at least 1,000 employees anywhere in the state. Additionally, at least half of employees at companies nominated for the award must complete an online survey about the overall workplace environment. The win marks the eighth consecutive year Gray Plant Mooty has appeared on the “Best Places to Work” list—the only law firm in Minnesota to have achieved that distinction.
This annual award from Minnesota’s largest county bar association is open to all public, private, and government legal employers. In selecting Gray Plant Mooty, the Hennepin County Bar Association awards committee took note of GPM’s long-standing efforts to attract, recruit, and retain a qualified, diverse workforce.
As one of the first law firms in the Twin Cities to create a Culture and Diversity committee (in 1993), GPM has developed an array of strong outreach and training initiatives designed to help the firm stay true to its goals. These include a minority summer associate program, extensive workforce training on diversity issues (such as the workplace theater production, “Your Face Here”), and co-sponsorship of numerous legal community and civic programs focused on diversity.
Gray Plant Mooty was selected as the best-in-class employer among midsize companies in this annual competition, sponsored by the Center for Ethical Business Cultures at the University of St. Thomas. The program evaluates employers on a range of key work-life initiatives, such as flexible work schedules, generous holiday and illness leave policies, dependent care assistance, informational programs to help employees meet personal and family challenges, and communications tools that allow employees to express opinions on business operations and the workplace environment.
